Bulls Island via ferry
Bulls Island is a part of the Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge and is only accessible by a 30-minute ferry ride. Coastal Expeditions operates the ferry service. Reservations are not required. Follow the signs to Cape Romain, then park at the boat ramp and walk to the end of the pier until the guide retrieves you. The ferry captains are very knowledgeable naturalists who will teach you a lot about the area during the excursion. You're on your own once they drop you off at the dock on Bulls Island. They are nice enough to provide you with trail maps and give an overview of what is doable in the allotted time. There is no way to tackle all of the trails during one day trip. It is best to take the trip when you have a full day available for hiking and when the weather is cooler. I strongly recommend against going during the middle of the summer. The heat and humidity are brutal and the insects will EAT YOU ALIVE! Even with potent bug repellent, the bugs in the middle of summer are unbearable. Bring a day pack with some lunch as well as plenty of water.
