H.L. Hunley Submarine
The H.L. Hunley was a small submarine built during the Civil War by the Confederate Navy to fight the Union blockades. The Hunley set out on a historic mission to sink the USS Housatonic on February 17, 1864. It completed its task, but mysteriously disappeared before returning to harbor. After many failed attempts, the wreckage was finally located in 1995, then retrieved in 2000. Archaeologists have been working on restoring the vessel for several years. The tour is relatively short but allows you to see the submarine in a containment tank while a guide points out a few parts. There are also some interesting displays scattered around the conservation center.
