Middleton Place
It's undeniable, Middleton Place is simply gorgeous. Walking around the gardens and rice fields with a large unobstructed view of the Ashley is breathtaking. There are a number of neat features included in the admission price. For example, you can assist with cow milking at certain times, take an African-American Focus Tour to learn about the lives of the slaves, visit the Garden Market & Nursery, take a Nature Walk, or talk with the Stableyard Artisans who are demonstrating various tasks such as spinning, blacksmithing, pottery, and carpentry. There is also a self-guided tour of the entire premises through the use of a small booklet and matching numbers on the ground. The down side is that Middleton Place is the most expensive plantation to visit, and to top things off, it costs another $10 to tour the house. The house is pretty impressive since it was built in 1755 and contains many original belongings such as furniture, paintings, silver, china, and books. Yet another option to your visit is a 45-minute carriage tour for $15. To tour the plantation and house will require 2-2.5 hours. So be sure you have enough time before committing yourself to the steep admission charge.
